The toothbrush is the primary tool used to clean teeth. It consists of a handle with a small brush on the end. Toothpaste is often put on a toothbrush before brushing to help with cleaning. Toothbrushes come in many different sizes, shapes, and forms. One of the primary goals of tooth brushing is to reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth. It is best to brush your teeth at least 2 minutes to ensure a complete cleaning.
While tooth brushing certainly doesn't get rid of all the bacteria in the mouth, it does break it up and keep it from being as harmful to your teeth and gums. This specifically breaks up dental plaque where bacteria transform into more dangerous strains.
Long before the modern era, many civilizations used various forms of a toothbrush often involving items like twigs, bones, and porcupine quills. However, the first toothbrush like we have today was created by William Addis of England in 1780. Since then there have been many different versions using different natural materials. It wasn't until 1938 that synthetic fibers were introduced as bristles. Many of us could not imagine being able to live without a toothbrush.
Even though electric toothbrushes are nothing new, today they are more popular than ever. There are many different designs and prices available from the sonic toothbrushes made by Sonicare to the pulsating toothbrushes made by Braun Oral B. There are many situations that are great for electric toothbrushes and we will be discussing them further in our pages.
